Ulli (Onion) Sambar


Ingredients

1.Tuar dal-1 cup
2.Grated coconut- ½ cup
3.Small onion- 2 cup
4.Tamarind-the size of a lime
5.Green chilly- 4
6.Sambar powder-4 tsp
7.Turmeric powder- 1 tsp
8.Curry leaves- a handful
9. Mustard seeds- 2 tsp
10.Red chilly – 2
11.Oil –2tsp

Method

Cook tuar dal in 1 1/2 cup of water adding green chilly, salt and turmeric powder and few curry leaves and keep aside.

Grind the grated coconut to a fine paste.

Soak the tamarind in little water, make into a pulp and keep aside.

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, red chilly and curry leaves and fry. Add finely chopped small onion fry till it becomes light brown, add the sambar powder and sauté well.

Mix the coconut paste and tamarind pulp with cooked tuar dal, stir well, finally add the fried masala and boil adding required water.

Ulli Sambar is ready to serve  with rice or idly.
